NHL Betting: Rangers vs Hurricanes Second Round Game 2 – 05/20/2022

The New York Rangers aim to even up the series against the Carolina Hurricanes after dropping Game 1 in overtime. The Hurricanes managed a late third-period comeback to force overtime before winning it on an Ian Cole blast. This is where you’ll find everything, including team win odds, the over/under, and point spreads.

New York Rangers (+145) vs Carolina Hurricanes (-175)

NYR: 4-4, 3.63 GF/GP, 3.88 GA/GP

CAR: 5-3, 3.25 GF/GP, 2.63 GA/GP

The Rangers were less than three minutes away from shutting out the Hurricanes in Game 1 before Sebastian Aho put his team on the scoreboard. Carolina was outshot 23-14 in the first two periods before tilting the ice in their favour for the third, firing 10 pucks at the Rangers’ goal. Cole’s blast was the second shot on goal for the Hurricanes, and it sent their fans home happy with a 1-0 series lead. Antti Raanta was spectacular, stopping 27 of 28 shots and finishing with a .964 save percentage.

Igor Shesterkin had himself a game but couldn’t hold down the fort long enough to secure the win. The Rangers were overwhelmed, and Shesterkin did what he could but to no avail. Carolina is entering Game 2 as heavy favourites, but don’t count the Rangers out. They dominated the first two periods and played solid defensively until Carolina’s puck-management game took over. If they can figure out Raanta early on, there’s hope the Rangers head back to their home rink with a tied series.

Point Spread

New York – Win/Lose By Fewer Than 2 Goals (+1.5, -185)

There’s plenty to like about the Rangers’ play in Game 1. They kept the first period tightly checked and dominated puck possession in the second, suffocating the Hurricanes’ defense with their cycling game. When Carolina dominated in shot attempts and possession in the third, Shesterkin was nearly perfect. It was the game he needed and one the Rangers team hoped for to instill some confidence.

If the series remains close as it did in Game 1, the advantage tips in the Rangers’ favour. They can play with a lead and shut things down in the neutral zone just as well as they can play trailing by a goal or two. Expect another one-goal game, and lean towards the Rangers for a good return with the +145 line.

Total Points

Total Goals Scored – Over 5.5 (-115)

While a 2-1 final works out well for both goaltenders and their numbers, it’s unlikely this will be the case for the remainder of the series. Both teams have too much firepower up front and weapons on the blue line to keep the score low. It was a fine clinic defensively on both sides, with only one player finishing with more than three shots. Expect the storm surge in Carolina to get the team going and strive for more offense in Game 2.

If it weren’t for the Hurricanes’ late-game push, Filip Chytil’s goal in the first period would have been enough. Alexis Lafrenière registered his first point in three games, setting up the tally. They’ll need more from their top two lines if they hope to continue skating with Carolina. Expect a high-scoring affair after both teams were quiet offensively, as Raanta and Shesterkin attempt to calm things down with another brilliant performance at both ends of the ice.
